Divne Flying Fox

Divine was a Grey Headed Flying Fox who lived at Batreach Kuranda.  About 1 month after this photo was taken, she passed away at the ripe old age of at least 30 (in the wild, her species lives to be about 20).  During her time at BatReach she endeared herself to both volunteers and visitors alike, and was an excellent ambassador/"Education Bat" for this increasingly marginalised species.

Flying foxes are keystone forest pollinators, but humans often consider them diseased pests and are constantly trying to destroy colonies through oftentimes violent "dispersal efforts".  As such, some species of flying fox are now endangered, but the "dispersals" continue. (Most notably, rainforest-dwelling spectacled flying foxes in Cairns just had some of their roosting trees cut down to make way for a rainforest-themed hotel)
